Kampuchea Garment Workers Cancel Large-Scale Strike Action

Workers decided to cancel a large-scale strike action yesterday after the government intervened and promised to arrange talks with employers.

Secretary General of the Kampuchea labor union, arti told Agence France-Presse that workers have returned to work, and the unions believe the government's response is fair and reasonable.
Sangen, Minister of social affairs of Kampuchea, said the government will meet with representatives of the employers and employees on the 27 day of this month to discuss the welfare issue of garment and shoemaking workers.
He warned that if workers continue to strike, they will affect employees, employers and the state.

Garment factory workers who were dissatisfied with low salaries began to strike on Monday.
The union said that up to 210 thousand employees were involved in the labor movement, and they came from 95 factories representing 2/3 of the workforce in the garment industry.
The Union had threatened to strike for at least a month earlier.
The Kampuchea government and the government agreed in July that the basic salary of garment and shoemaking workers should be set at $61 per month (about 81 new yuan), but the Trade Union believes that this is not enough for employees to cope with the expenses of clothing, food and housing, and requires that the base salary be raised to $93 per month.
